a device for pulling stumps in clearing land for farms or roads.
- 1825  As there are many persons wishing to see my Stump Machine in operation, I propose to work with it on Thursday the tenth day of Nov. next, on my farm in Trafalgar, near the lake shore.
- 1905  The best device for ridding the land of pine stumps was the stumping machine.
- 1921  (1923)  . . . the other three men handled the stumping-machine with the aid of Charles Eugene. The pyramidal scaffolding was put in place above a large stump and lowered, the chains which were then attached to the root passed over a pulley, and the horse at the other end started away quickly, flinging himself against the traces and showering earth with his hoofs.
- 1963  In the eighteen-forties stumping machines came into use in older settled districts along the front, their owners sometimes contracting to remove stumps, large and small, for 50 cents each.
